THE FORGOTTEN DRAFT: 1971
In these somewhat heady days following the season's first pre-season game, featuring strong performances by the most recent draft class, I read with interest on another site, yet another piece extolling the unprecedented accomplishments of the draft class of 1974. There's no doubt that the '74 draft was unprecedented and will remain, with a quadrant of future Hall of Famers, the gold standard to which all other draft classes are held, the best ever....

BEHIND ENEMY LINES: FOXBORO THURSDAY NIGHT
As his cousin, "Bo" was unable to attend, my long-time friend, Stupid Charlie, invited me to the Patriots-Saints preseason game tonight in Foxboro. I've not much interest, honestly, in pre-season football, and much less if not involving the Pittsburgh Steelers. Foxboro's about an hour's drive away, it's a nightmare to exit onto Route 1, it would be a very night late with work the next day...but, hadn't seen Stupid Charlie in awhile, we've...

ART II: LESSONS FROM HONEST ABE
By Swissvale 72
After not pursuing General Robert E. Lee's Confederate forces despite having vastly superior numbers following the Battle of Antietam in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln had this to say about his commanding general of the Army of the Potomac, "If General McClellan isn't going to use his army, I'd like to borrow it for a time."
So it is with the Pittsburgh Steelers as President Arthur J. Rooney II makes decisions...

FAMOUS FAUX PAS: COWHER'S BURNT BAKER’S DOZEN
Previously, I listed current Steelers coach Mike Tomlin's "Bonehead Moments," but the hue and cry came from Steeler Nation demanding fairness, calling for the same standard to be applied to his predecessor, Bill "The Chin" Cowher. My initial response was that such an assignment would cause me to request a sabbatical from my place of employment, Cowher's capacity for bone-headedness was so expansive.
While Cowher's transgressions...

MIKE TOMLIN: BONEHEAD MOMENTS
Lest it be thought that those that actually wear the uniforms of the Pittsburgh Steelers have a monopoly on bone-headedness insofar as the fortunes of the Black & Gold, let’s review the three-year tenure of Head Coach Mike Tomlin.
As we all know, Coach T is now the beneficiary of a three-year contract extension, at an as yet undetermined price. I don’t think that anyone’s really surprised. Even with the option year of 2011, would...
